Bungie’s First Game After Halo Is Destiny

In 2001 Bungie set the gaming world on fire. Microsoft’s first foray into the console world was unleashed and along for the ride was what has gone on to be one of the most iconic series in gaming, Halo Combat Evolved. Few will argue with me when I say that Master Chief is the face of the Xbox. He and the Halo brand have propelled and maintained Microsoft’s transition into the console world this and last generation.

In 2007 Bungie announced that they were parting ways with Microsoft but all rights to the Halo games past and present would belong to Microsoft. Bungie stuck around for the Halo 3 expansion Halo: ODST and the prequel Halo Reach before the series was handed over to 343 industries.

In 2010 Bungie signed a 10 year publishing deal with Activision but will maintain control and ownership of any new IP’s they develop during the contracts tenure. Since then the world has waited to see what Bungie came up with and recently a leaked document has revealed that it will be called Destiny.

IGN broke the leaked story and revealed that the game takes place 700 years in Earth’s future, “in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age.” Supposedly the document was given to them by a reader and mentioned that they hoped Destiny would be “fun and accessible to all,” with a setting in “a universe as deep, tangible and relatable as that of the Star Wars franchise.” If the Star Wars reference hasn’t sold you here’s the rest of the details from the leak:

“A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and-eventually-overcoming it.”

IGN reached out to Bungie and received the following statement as well as an image from the game:

“We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net. Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.”

I for one am over the “second moon” about this game. Don’t Hate The Geek will be following Destiny very closely so stay tuned for more details as they become available.
